2024 Important update to ISO standards – Climate change

Why have the standards changed?
To support the ISO London Declaration on climate change, ISO has added two new statements to several management system standards. Consequently, our clients are required to consider the impact of climate change on their ability to achieve the intended results of their management systems.

Which management systems are affected?
There are several management systems that are amended, those relevant to ForeFront Certification are:

  • ISO 9001:2015 Quality management systems
  • ISO 14001:2015 Environmental management systems
  • ISO 45001:2018 Occupational health and safety management systems.
  • ISO 50001:2018 Energy management systems
  • ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Information security, cybersecurity, and privacy protection — Information security management systems

What has changed?

4.1 Understanding the organisation and its context.

The organisation shall determine external and internal issues that are relevant to its purpose and that affect its ability to achieve the intended result(s) of its XXX management system.

Added: The organisation shall determine whether climate change is a relevant issue.

4.2 Understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties.

The organisation shall determine:

  • the interested parties that are relevant to the XXX management system.
  • the relevant requirements of these interested parties.
  • which of these requirements will be addressed

Added: NOTE 2 Relevant interested parties can have requirements related to climate change.

What do you need to do?

  • Consideration of climate change in the organisations internal and external issues to determine what needs to be addressed.
  • Assessment of interested parties.

What if climate change is not an issue?

  • Provided that the decision and assessment of this are documented, auditors will evaluate its acceptance.

What If I need further information on climate change to put this in place?

Sources such as ISO are useful to ascertain if climate change is an external issue for the organisation to determine whether action planning will be necessary – ISO.Org

When does this take effect?

There is no transition time; the requirements are in effect and will be audited immediately.
